Description
STAGE HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE
NANTUCKET SOUND, MA.
This lighthouse can be accessed by a long mile and half walk along Hardings Beach at West Chatham. An old keepers dwelling that is available to renters and a tower without the light room. Surf fishermen can ply the waters in a very close channel in the inlet to Stage Harbor where the tides run strong and the stripe bass are plentiful. The steel, brick lined tower and keepers dwelling were completed in 1880. The light was decommissioned in 1933 and has never enjoyed electricity. This is another one of those lighthouse which, when visited alone, speaks volumes about the life of a keeper and his/her family. Desolation, is the first word that comes to mind. Stressful is another word, considering the importance of keeping the light going all night long, despite whatever weather mother nature might conjure up. However, in todays world, the isolation is welcomed as one contemplates the outdoors, the lighthouse, and the mariners who were so dependent upon these stark outposts.
